Summary

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study provides a framework to quantify and compare the health of populations using a summary measure of mortality and disability, the disability-adjusted life year (DALY). The study estimates that neglected tropical diseases, including trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, and leprosy, accounted for 177,000 deaths and 20 million DALYs worldwide in 2002, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. The GBD framework integrates and validates fragmentary information on disease burden, using a standard unit of health measurement, and includes all disease and injury causes in the analysis.
