Summary

The NMC register has reached a record 788,638 professionals, a 4% increase from last year and 14.3% from five years ago. The number of registered nurses has grown by 3.8-3.9% to 731,058, with 41,716 midwives and 9,339 nursing associates. New joiners to the register rose to 52,148, with 27,142 domestically educated and 25,006 internationally educated. International joiners now account for one in five professionals, with over four in five educated outside Europe. The register's ethnic diversity has increased, with 27.7% of professionals from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds. However, research highlights disparities in referrals to Fitness to Practice processes for Black professionals and the impact of discrimination on care quality. The number of leavers fell by 1.4% to 26,755, but research indicates that burnout, lack of support, concerns about care quality, workload, and staffing levels were frequent reasons for leaving.
