Summary

The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls bodily functions like breathing, heartbeat, and digestion. The Polyvagal Theory describes a new model of the nervous system, dividing the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) into two branches: the Ventral Vagus Nerve (VVN) and the Dorsal Vagus Nerve. The VVN, or Social Engagement System, generates positive states of relaxation and social engagement, and is associated with increases in health and emotional wellbeing. When we feel safe, our Social Engagement system functions optimally, and we can relax, expand, and connect with others. The VVN innervates areas above the diaphragm, including the face, throat, and heart, and is regulated by five cranial nerves. Craniosacral therapy can help shift the nervous system into a state of social engagement, improving vagal tone and regulating the entire nervous system, leading to increased happiness, connection, and feelings of safety.
