Summary

Mental health problems are common in crisis-affected countries, but few interventions are available to support those in need. A study led by the World Health Organization (WHO) between 2014 and 2016 found that an evidence-based psychological intervention called Problem Management Plus (PM+) can improve mental health outcomes for people living in Pakistan and is likely cost-effective. The study's findings have had significant academic impact, with further trials and scale-up of PM+ ongoing, and the PM+ manual has been published by the WHO and is widely used by international non-governmental organizations. The intervention has been shown to be effective in improving mental health and functioning, with significantly lower anxiety and depression scores, and can be delivered by lay health workers with minimal training.
