Diabetes management strategies for adults through nutrition education are essential for diabetic control. A healthy dietary regimen, regular exercise, and often medication are crucial elements. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) states there is no "one-size-fits-all" eating regimen for those with diabetes, and nutrition therapy plays a critical role in management. Ideally, individuals with diabetes should be referred to a registered dietitian for nutrition therapy at or soon after diagnosis and for ongoing follow-up. However, many people with diabetes do not receive structured diabetes education and/or nutrition therapy. Evidence-based nutrition recommendations are offered for healthcare professionals to use, as medical nutrition therapy (MNT) can improve clinical outcomes and decrease costs. Various eating patterns are acceptable for diabetes management, and personal preferences and metabolic goals should be considered when recommending an eating pattern. Nutrition therapy goals should be developed collaboratively with the individual and be based on an assessment of their current eating patterns, preferences, and metabolic goals.
