Summary

A study examined the impact of an on-shelf nutrition labelling system, Guiding Stars, in supermarkets on consumer food-purchasing behaviors. The system assigns a rating of 0 to 3 stars based on nutritional quality. Results showed that shoppers in intervention supermarkets made small but significant shifts towards purchasing foods with higher nutritional ratings, resulting in slightly less trans fat and sugar and more fiber and omega-3 fatty acids being purchased. The study also found increases in the number of products per transaction, price per product purchased, and total revenues. However, consumer awareness and understanding of the system were modest, and many were confused by the meaning of a 0-star product. The study supports policies promoting on-shelf nutrition labels but suggests caution until optimal label design and mechanisms for improving dietary intake are confirmed.
