Summary

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is supporting countries in their COVID-19 response, leveraging its resources, infrastructure, and expertise to strengthen health systems and global health security. The GPEI has paused preventive polio vaccination campaigns until July 2020 and recommended postponing polio outbreak response campaigns until at least June 2020 to prevent COVID-19 transmission. Polio staff and assets are being repurposed to support COVID-19 response efforts, including contact tracing, surveillance, and risk communication, in endemic countries such as Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, as well as in outbreak countries like Angola, Benin, and Cameroon.
