Summary

Researchers from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, China, conducted a study to determine the clinical significance of measuring serum true insulin in overweight and non-obese individuals with varying degrees of glucose tolerance. They estimated beta-cell function by calculating indices, including homeostasis model assessment-beta-cell (HOMA-β), modified beta-cell function index (MβCI), and the ratio of increasing serum insulin and plasma glucose levels after 60 minutes of glucose loading (∆I60/∆G60). The study involved 158 patients with varying degrees of glucose tolerance, who were randomly chosen from outpatients and routine physical examinations. The results showed that ∆I60/∆G60 was a good index for estimating beta-cell function, especially when true insulin could not be measured. The study concluded that the increasing serum insulin and plasma glucose levels after 60 minutes of glucose loading was a widely used index that applied not only to diabetes but also to overweight individuals.
