The Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association (CNA) is celebrating International Nurses Day (May 12, 2021) with the theme "Nurses: A Leading Voice - Vision for Future Healthcare".
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world, and the way nurses provide care. It has highlighted the important role nurses play and has proven that they are the backbone of healthcare services.
Nurses have worked on the front lines, educating, researching, treating, vaccinating, and caring for people. They have also fallen ill, worked without proper protection, and been away from their loved ones.
The pandemic has taught us that we need to rebuild our healthcare systems and societies to address inequalities and invest in healthcare, considering that health expenditures can have long-term benefits.
The state should examine social determinants of health, including poverty, poor nutrition, education, and unemployment, and implement strategies to make society more equal and just.
The pandemic has also revealed that without drastic changes in policies and practices, we will not achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
The vision of nurses for future healthcare places them in positions of influence and power to contribute to more human-centered and comprehensive approaches to healthcare, leading to better outcomes for people and communities.
The Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association thanks and congratulates all colleagues for their work and assures that it will continue to promote the nursing profession to provide healthcare for all.
