A survey conducted by YouGov from June 30 to October 1, 2021, gathered data on the acceptability of authors writing characters from different backgrounds. The results showed:

- 80% of respondents found it acceptable for a white author to write a character from an ethnic minority.
- 82% found it acceptable for an author from an ethnic minority to write a white character.
- 82% found it acceptable for a male author to write a female character.
- 84% found it acceptable for a female author to write a male character.
- 81% found it acceptable for a straight author to write a gay or bisexual character.
- 87% found it acceptable for a gay or bisexual author to write a straight character.
- 74% found it acceptable for a cisgender author to write a transgender character.
- 83% found it acceptable for a transgender author to write a cisgender character.

The survey also found variations in responses based on age groups, with younger respondents generally being more accepting.
