Summary

Monkton's St Mary Magdalene tower was built in the 12th century and its present top stage was added in the 14th. The current ring of four bells was cast at different dates, with the third bell cast in 1615 and the treble in 1633. The bells fell into disrepair, and by 1870, the tenor bell was sold. In 1910, the bells were restored, but a new tenor bell could not be afforded. In 2012, a replacement tenor bell was found, and after tuning and re-fitting, it was dedicated in 2014. The tower was also rewired, and the bell chamber floor was repaired. The new ring of four is now complete, with the Heavy Brigade hanging the replacement tenor and making improvements to the roping.
