Euskaltzaindiak 142. arauan eman zituen antzinateko eskualdeen euskarazko izenak, eta oraingo erabaki hau haren jarraipena da. Antzinateko hirien eta eskualdeen arteko bereizketa formalaz haratago, zibilizazioetatik iritsi zaizkigun leku-izen horiek guztiak multzo berean sartzekoak dira grafia-kontuei dagokionez. Euskal idazle klasikoek emandako eredua kontuan hartuta, leku-izen horiek etxekotzen saiatu ziren, euskarazko arropaz janzten. Euskaltzaindiak zerrenda bat argitaratu du, non antzinateko hirien euskarazko izenak agertzen diren, hala nola Abidos, Adab, Akad, Alesia, Alexandria, Antiokia, Asur, Atenas, Babilonia, Betel, Betleem, Biblos, Bubastis, Damasko, Delfos, Dodona, Dur Sharrukin, Dura-Europos, Ebla, Edesa, Efeso, Ekbatana, Ekron, Elea, Elide, Emaus, Epidauro, Eretria, Eridu, Eshnunna, Esparta, Farsalia, Filipos, Fozea, Gadara, Gergovia, Gezer, Gordio, Gortina, Hadrianopolis, Halikarnaso, Harran, Hattusa, Heliopolis, Heraklea, Herkulano, Hermopolis, Himera, Hipona, Idalion, Isin, Jeriko, Jerusalem, Kalkis.
