The Imperial Japanese Navy sought to improve its aircraft gun armament in the 1940s, leading to the development of the 14 mm 14-Shi machine gun, which used a 14.5 x 100RB cartridge. The gun had a low rate of fire of 630 rpm and was not adopted due to its non-standard cartridge and inability to be used as a synchronised weapon. The project was terminated in August 1943. Meanwhile, the Japanese Navy also considered and rejected other heavy machine guns, including the Scotti, Breda-SAFAT, and Browning M1921. Eventually, the German MG 131 was adopted as a temporary measure under the designation 13 mm Type 2, and a modified Browning AN-M2 was produced as the 13 mm Type 3, but not in time to be widely used.
