Summary

The Archaeology Southwest-University of Arizona Preservation Archaeology Field School completed its second field season at the Gila River Farm site in New Mexico in 2017. Eleven undergraduates participated in the six-week program, learning excavation, survey, and laboratory analysis skills. The site, occupied by farmers during the Cliff phase (A.D. 1300-1450), featured at least three areas of adobe architecture. Excavations in the southern room block revealed well-preserved walls and rooms, including one with a large number of fish bones and another with bird limbs, suggesting intentional placement. The team also found perforated plates, pigments, and grinding stones, indicating potential pottery-making activities. Further research is planned to investigate the site's size, population, and species present in the area.
