Summary

Korean slavery was passed from Koryŏ to Chosŏn and showed little sign of weakening by the 17th century, with slaves being numerous and economically central, making pre-modern Korea a "slave society". Scholar Yu Hyŏngwŏn argued for reform, including abolition of slavery, suggesting that the law governing slavery would have to be abolished if a true moral king's government was put into practice. He proposed gradual changes, allowing relations between higher and lower orders of society to become warmer and the practice of hiring workers to increase, before abolishing slavery, and suggested that existing slaves would continue to be recognized as such until they died, but the law providing for the inheritance of slavery would be abolished.
