Summary

Am 16. und 17. April 1945 fand in Düsseldorf die "Aktion Rheinland" statt, bei der fünf Männer erschossen wurden, die versucht hatten, die Stadt kampflos an die alliierten Truppen zu übergeben. Die Gruppe um Dr. August Wiedenhofen und Aloys Odenthal hatte sich zum Ziel gesetzt, Deutschland vom nationalsozialistischen Regime zu befreien und neu zu gestalten. Der stellvertretende Polizeipräsident Dr. Dr. Otto Goetsch unterstützte die Gruppe und half bei der Legitimierung von Wiedenhofen und Odenthal als Unterhändler für die Stadt Düsseldorf. Die Ereignisse fanden vor dem Hintergrund des herannahenden Kriegsendes und der zunehmenden Bedrohung durch die alliierten Truppen statt.
