San Simón's landscape features an orderly arrangement of human-made structures, primarily made of granite, with nature still playing a leading role. The island's architecture, including docks, perimeter walls, and a three-arched bridge, showcases high-quality execution and a mastery of the material. The transformation of the natural setting was influenced by two ideas: "quarantine architecture" and the sensitivity of enlightened individuals, such as Alejo Andrade Yañez, who designed the lazaretto on San Simón. The lazaretto was modeled after the Nouvelles Infirmeries in Marseille, which featured rigorous standards for partitioning and segregation of activities. San Simón's lazaretto, implemented in 1838, included various buildings, such as a nursing home, administration building, and warehouses, as well as a bridge connecting the two islands. Alejo Andrade Yáñez, the project manager, was a skilled engineer and architect who incorporated his technical knowledge and sensitive spirit towards Galicia's heritage into the design.
