Summary

Alexander Frenkley joined the Voice of America in 1946 as the US Department of State planned to start broadcasting to the Soviet Union in Russian. Frenkley, born in Odessa, Russia in 1907, was recruited due to his native knowledge of Russian. He underwent a translation test and was accepted as a script writer, despite initially being told he would be hired as an editor. Frenkley was part of a small group of around a dozen people who were tasked with creating a nucleus of competent personnel for the broadcasts. The group was led by Charles W. Thayer, Nicholas Nabokov, and Eddie Raquello, who provided technical training and helped transform the group into modern broadcasters. Frenkley's background was far from radio, having been born into a family of intellectuals and industrialists, and having immigrated to the US in 1939. He was given the task of preparing a schedule of programs in science, technology, and agriculture, and was amazed by his own ability to submit a comprehensive list despite not being a scientist or technician.
