Summary

Aotearoa New Zealand has a unique earth building heritage, with Māori using earth for floors and as a binder for fibrous walling materials, and European settlers bringing earth building techniques with them in the 19th century. Earth buildings were commonplace, but declined as processed timber became available, and almost ceased by the mid-20th century. After World War Two, interest in earth building was revived, and has continued to the present day, with the establishment of the Earth Building Association of New Zealand and the publication of the New Zealand Earth Building Standards in 1998. Despite this history, no comprehensive history of earth building in Aotearoa has been written, and this paper explores possible approaches to writing such a history, analyzing methodologies employed in local and international architectural histories and identifying structural hierarchies, such as chronological, regional, technique, and typology.
