Summary

UAV surveying was used for complete mapping and documentation of archaeological findings at the Early Neolithic site of Portonovo in Italy. The methodology combined terrestrial laser scanning, close range photogrammetry, and photogrammetric aerial survey using a UAV platform. The integration of different acquisition technologies provided a wider set of outcomes for various purposes and restitution scales. The 3D digital acquisition techniques reduced excavation mapping time and data acquisition errors, and provided a general overview of field documentation and detailed analysis of structures. The use of UAVs increased knowledge of the site, allowing for complete vision of excavations over the years. The study evaluated the potentials and downsides of using UAVs in archaeology, and aimed to make the site accessible to the public through virtual reconstructions.
