Summary

The Aztec empire extended from the Valley of Mexico to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, with many significant cities, including Tenayuca, Sta. Cecilia Acatitlan, Teopanzolco, Tlatelolco, Tetzcotzinco, Tepoztlan, Huexotla, Calixtlahuaca, Coatetelco, and Malinalco. Tenayuca, founded in 1224 C.E., was a Chichimec city with a four-tiered double-pyramid temple, ornamented with rows of serpents, symbolizing association with the sun god cult and fire renewal. The pyramid had several superimposed layers, with carved stone slabs, cement, and color applied, and was decorated with serpent heads, year glyphs, shields, and other symbols. The Wall of Serpents, or coatepantli, covered three sides of the pyramid's platform, with 43, 50, and 45 serpent heads on the north, east, and south walls, respectively. The tomb-altar in front of the pyramid had colored paintings of crossbones and skulls inside and carved stone reliefs illustrating skulls outside.
