Summary

Ezra, a skilled scribe and priest, returned to Jerusalem with a group of priests and commoners, armed with a decree from Artaxerxes that gave him authority to administer the law of Moses and appoint magistrates and judges over the Jewish community in the satrapy Beyond-the-River. As a scribe, Ezra was responsible for preserving and interpreting the sacred records, and his role was crucial in maintaining the Jewish community's religious traditions. Ezra's official position in the Persian civil service, possibly as head of the Jewish section of the Ministry for Religious Affairs, gave him significant powers and privileges. His return to Jerusalem was seen as a fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies and marked a significant shift in the status of Palestinian Jewry from a national state to a religious body, with the high priest becoming the representative and real ruler of the community.
