Summary

Roland Frederick Baker was born on 17 January 1921 in Stowupland, Suffolk. He joined the Territorial Army at 18 and was called up for active service in 1939, becoming a Company Commander's driver. His regiment was posted to Singapore in 1942, where they fought in the Battle of Singapore and were captured by the Japanese, enduring 3.5 years of brutal captivity. After liberation in 1945, Baker returned home, worked as a lorry driver, and later became a transport office manager. He married Kathleen Birch in 1953 and had a happy life together until her death in 2014. Baker passed away on 30 September 2017 after being diagnosed with colon cancer.
