Summary

Honderd jaar geleden sprak Gerrit Jan Heering over de kerk als maatschappelijk geweten, waarin hij benadrukte dat de kerk maatschappelijk verantwoordelijkheid draagt en zich daarvoor moet uitspreken. Nu, in 2021, schrijven remonstranten een bezinningsbrief over de oplopende tegenstellingen in de samenleving, waarin polarisatie mensen van elkaar vervreemdt en uitsluit. Zij voelen zich geroepen om de samenleving een spiegel voor te houden en de Bijbelse boodschap te delen dat men de ander niet in de steek moet laten. De pandemie heeft maatschappelijke breuklijnen scherper zichtbaar gemaakt, en de technologie heeft bijna iedereen in een 'echokamer van het eigen gelijk' geplaatst. De remonstranten zoeken naar een manier om liefdevol om te gaan met onszelf en met elkaar, en om begrip te hebben voor mensen met andere opvattingen. Een huisarts deelt zijn ervaringen in de wachtkamer van zijn praktijk, waar mensen van verschillende achtergronden en culturen samenkomen, en waar hij merkt dat achter de uiterlijke verschijning vaak soortgelijke mensen schuilgaan.
