Fats moved to Los Angeles in 1946 and started playing music, eventually forming his own band and adopting the stage name Harmonica Fats, which was inspired by another musician, Harmonica Slim. He became a popular figure on the LA blues scene, known for his energetic stage act and humorous songs, and played with other notable musicians, including George Smith and Johnnie Dyer.
