aantal Nederlandse auteurs, onder wie A. den Doolaard, dr. M. van Blankenstein en de Amerikaans-Nederlandse auteur Hendrik Willem van Loon, werden uit de openbare leeszalen en bibliotheken verwijderd. Het bestuur van de Centrale Vereniging voor Openbare Leeszalen en Bibliotheken controleerde of men zich aan de instructies hield. In december '40 waren de boeken van 200 auteurs uit de circulatie genomen. Veel boeken mochten alleen voor studiedoeleinden uitgeleend worden. De Sicherheitspolizei und SD voerde ook een zuivering bij de uitgeverijen uit, waarbij 140 boeken verboden werden en ca. 300 000 exemplaren in beslag genomen en vernietigd werden.
