Summary

A Bronze Age burial mound at Blair Drummond, Perthshire, was excavated in 1927 and 1928. The mound, 75 feet in diameter and 15 feet high, contained a small cairn of stones over a primary grave formed of large slabs and boulders. A short cist, 3 feet 3 inches long, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet 3 inches deep, was found at the south-south-eastern edge, but it was empty and likely a secondary burial. A larger, undisturbed cist, 4 feet 6 inches long, 3 feet wide, and 4 feet deep, was found at the center, containing small fragments of unburnt human bone and teeth. A cinerary urn, belonging to the Bronze Age, was found inverted near the surface, containing cremated human bones. The urn is a cordoned variety, decorated with triangles and a reticulated design. The mound is an earthen burial mound, rare in Scotland, where stone cairns are more common. The primary grave and the cist near the edge are likely earlier than the cremated remains in the urn.
