The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos & Colorado Railroad, completed in 1853, was the first operating railroad in Texas and used the standard 4' 8 1/2" gauge. It initially ran from Harrisburg to Stafford and later extended to other cities, including Houston and Columbus. The railroad changed hands several times due to financial difficulties, with the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company emerging in 1870. The railroad played a significant role in Texas' development and is now part of the Southern Pacific's transcontinental Sunset Route.
