Equity in the Center works to increase racial equity in the social sector by shifting mindsets, practices, and systems. The organization's goals include adopting a Race Equity Culture, defining and implementing race equity internally and externally, and centering race equity as a core goal of social impact. A Race Equity Culture is the antithesis of dominant culture, promoting integration over assimilation and creating an inclusive environment. The Race Equity Cycle is a process of change that organizations go through to transform from a white dominant culture to a Race Equity Culture, involving increased representation, a stronger culture of inclusion, and the application of a race equity lens. Achieving race equity requires examining all four levels of racism (personal, interpersonal, institutional, and structural) and committing to change. Building a Race Equity Culture is foundational work that creates conditions for adopting anti-racist mindsets and actions. To get started, organizations can establish a shared vocabulary, identify race equity champions, name race equity work as a strategic imperative, open a continuous dialogue, and disaggregate data. A fully committed Race Equity Culture exhibits characteristics such as leadership ranks holding a critical mass of people of color, staff and stakeholders skilled at talking about race and racism, and programs that are culturally responsive and explicit about race equity.
