The 1984 event had 98 marathon starters and 136 half marathon starters, with David Morley winning the marathon in 2:34:33 and Tessa Brockwell being the first lady in 2:50:03. The half marathon was won by Ray Purdue in 1:11:07. In 1985, the event had official time keeping ceasing at 4 ½ hours, and David Eltringham won the marathon in 2:24:17, the fastest time run in Bunbury. The half marathon was won by Henk Stoffers in 1:11:58. The events featured notable runners, including John Gilmore, who broke two world records in Bunbury, and Phyllis Head, who ran in her 4th event in the over 65 category.
