Summary

Christianity is a positive institution with a 18-century existence, while infidelity is a mere negation with no formal existence, facts, or proof. To defend Christianity, one must develop and show its benevolent and divine nature, and its effects on human nature. A comparison between sincere Christians and sincere pagans or infidels is proposed, with the outcome to be decided by a disinterested umpire. The author argues that Jesus Christ is a real person with a unique and original character, and that infidelity is merely a state of mind, a negative idea, and a spiritual jaundice, which cannot be philosophically compared to Christianity. The author also claims that skepticism and unbelief have no substitute for Christianity and that the light of nature, reason, and conscience are insufficient to produce faith, civilization, and virtue.
