Second Sunday After the Epiphany

Welcome to Worship. Today’s readings all have the idea of knowing or being known in them.
In the Old Testament reading, even though “Samuel did not know the LORD,” the LORD knows
Samuel and introduces Himself to Samuel. In the Gospel, Jesus’ intimate knowledge of Nathanael
prompts the disciple to ask Jesus, “How did you know me?” In the Epistle, Paul asks the questions
of God’s people, “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?” and “Do you not
know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you?”
In the Bible, the concept of knowing indicates an intimate knowledge of a person. Knowing God is
more than knowing things about him. Knowing God includes experiencing his presence and
power. To know God is to be loved by him. This morning, Jesus invites all of us to know Him better
with the words, “Come and see!”
Today we celebrate the Lord’s Supper in which He feeds us with His body and blood.
The Lutheran Church recognizes the real presence of the body and blood of Christ in
this Sacrament, and we ask all who attend the Sacrament to share this faith with us.
Members of our sister congregations in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod are
welcome to commune. If you are a guest and want to receive the Sacrament, please

But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and
receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us
first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have
sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful
condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our
heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful
to me, a sinner.

Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting
life. Amen.

Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives
you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I
