Summary

The Decision-Making Model for the Conservation and Presentation of Contemporary Art has been revised to address complex problems in conserving modern and contemporary art. The original 1999 model, developed by the Dutch Foundation for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (SBMK), consisted of a 7-step flowchart. However, contemporary art forms and research results have necessitated a revision. The revised model, developed by the Cologne Institute for Conservation Science (CICS), consists of a 9-step flowchart, including two additional steps: "Point of Departure" and "Implementation and Assessment". The model considers both material and intangible aspects of an artwork, including the artist's intent, installation instructions, and the artwork's trajectory, and allows for dynamic decision-making and reflexivity. The revised model aims to provide a more comprehensive and flexible framework for conservators and curators to make informed decisions about the conservation and presentation of contemporary art.
