John Gabriel Perboyre was born in France in 1802 into a devout family and was ordained a priest in 1826. He joined the Congregation of the Mission and requested to be sent on foreign missions, despite concerns about his health. In 1835, he traveled to China, where he worked as a missionary, visiting scattered Christian communities and caring for the poor. He was captured by soldiers in 1839, tortured, and eventually sentenced to death. Perboyre was strangled on a gibbet on September 11, 1840. He was beatified by Leo XIII in 1889 and canonized by John Paul II on June 2, 1996, due to a decree about a miraculous healing attributed to his intercession.
