Diaspora e Shqipërisë përbëhet nga "diaspora e vjetër" dhe "diaspora e re". Diaspora e vjetër përbëhet nga emigrantë që kanë emigruar para vitit 1944 dhe ata që u larguan gjatë viteve 1945-1990, ndërsa diaspora e re përbëhet nga emigrantët që kanë emigruar pas viteve 1990. Numri i diasporës së re llogaritet të jetë rreth 1,68 milionë shtetas jashtë vendit ose rreth 37 % të shtetasve shqiptarë gjithsej. INSTAT përdor metoda të tërthorta për kryerjen e një vlerësimi mbi numrin e migrantëve, duke krahasuar popullsinë e regjistrit civil me popullsinë banuese. Kufizimet e kësaj metode përfshijnë mosincludimin e shqiptarëve që kanë hequr dorë nga shtetësia shqiptare, lindjet e pa-regjistruara jashtë vendit dhe komunitetet e hershme shqiptare në botë.
