Dannebrog har siden 1219 været danskernes nationale samlingspunkt. Flagreglerne omfatter bl.a., at flagstangen skal være hvid eller naturfarvet med rød knop, og flaget skal hejses og nedhales i et roligt tempo. Flaget må aldrig røre jorden og skal hejses kl. 8:00 og nedhales ved solnedgang, eller senest kl. 20:00. Ved dødsfald og mindegudstjenester skal flaget sættes på halv, og der er specifikke regler for, hvordan flaget skal behandles og børnes. Kasserede Dannebrog må ikke smides væk eller genbruges, men skal brændes. Der er også regler for prioritetsrækkefølge ved sammenfald i flagdage, og andre regler, som at flaget må aldrig røre jorden og at der ikke må være mere end et flag på en flagstang.
