Summary

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) has a complex history of race, racism, and resistance. Founded in 1946 as the College of Charlotte, the university has grown from its roots in a rural area to become the state's urban university. The history of the land on which the university is built is marked by the forced removal of Native American tribes, including the Catawba, Cheraw, Sugeree, Wateree, and Waxhaw Peoples, and the enslavement of African people. The university's main campus was formerly a plantation, with at least 30 enslaved individuals buried in the Alexander plantation slave cemetery. UNC Charlotte has acknowledged this history with a land acknowledgment plaque, recognizing the need to support and listen to Indigenous and Black voices. The university's history with regards to integration is relatively calm, with no intense riots or protests, but the experiences of Black and Latinx communities on campus are largely undocumented.
