Summary

Hanukkah is an 8-day festival commemorating the Maccabee family's victory over Syrian tyrant Antiochus in the 2nd century B.C. Antiochus tried to hellenize the Hebrews, destroying the Temple, forbidding circumcision, and stopping Sabbath worship. Judah Maccabee led a revolt, and upon retaking the Temple, they found it desecrated and began to restore it, trusting in YHWH as they lit the Menorah with insufficient oil, which miraculously burned for 8 days. The dreidel, a spinning top with Hebrew letters, was originally used to secretly study Torah during persecution, with the letters determining the subject of discussion. The dreidel led to the development of the Haftarah portion of Scripture and symbolizes freedom and devotion to YHWH's word.
