Course Objectives:

1. Critical Analysis: Evaluate historical documentation for quality and substance from diverse sources related to historic preservation.
2. Preservation Law & Policy: Understand the effects, opportunities, and limitations of various preservation laws, codes, and designations, examining government, nonprofit, and private sector involvement.
3. Global Perspectives: Research and compare international historic preservation efforts with those in the United States.
4. Documentation & Presentation: Conduct research, survey, and document individual properties for National Register of Historic Places listing, presenting findings through written and oral formats.

- National Register of Historic Places: criteria, nomination process, and case studies.
- National Heritage Areas program and the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.
- International perspectives on historic preservation.
- Using historic preservation for neighborhood revitalization and community development.
- The Atlanta Beltline project as a case study in urban renewal.

Course Structure:

- Weekly lectures, guest speakers, and discussions.

History 8700 (Spring 2016) is a research seminar focused on historic preservation techniques, including documentation, analysis, and protection of historical sites.
