The National Senior Certificate History P1 marking guideline for September 2023 consists of 24 pages and is divided into two main sections: source-based questions and essay questions.

The essay will be assessed holistically, taking into account the construction of the argument, selection of factual evidence, and interpretation of the question.

The assessment procedures for essays include keeping the synopsis in mind, awarding ticks for relevant introductions, main points, and conclusions, and using the PEEL structure (Point, Explanation, Example, Link). The matrix is used to determine the content and presentation levels, and an overall mark is allocated based on the intersection of these levels.
