Summary

The History of Malaria in Hong Kong" at the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences showcases the city's past struggles with malaria, which was endemic in the 19th century, killing 24% of troops and 10% of civilians in 1843. The disease was eventually controlled through monitoring, treatment, and contact tracing, with the help of discoveries such as the link between malaria and mosquitoes, and the development of Artemisinin, a frontline antimalarial drug derived from a traditional Chinese medicine herb. Despite being largely eradicated in Hong Kong, malaria remains a serious problem globally, with 3.2 billion people at risk of infection and 500,000 deaths annually.
