Housing & Equitable Cities - Indicator 3.2 Assessment

Topic/Purpose: This COP addresses the global housing crisis, particularly in rapidly urbanizing countries of the global South, through research and policy advocacy aimed at creating more equitable cities. It focuses on:

Understanding the role of housing in urbanization processes.
Contributing to inclusive and equitable city policies.
Developing Southern perspectives on housing and urbanization theory.

The COP comprises 12 active members, including:

Academics: Researchers and scholars from diverse disciplines related to housing, urban planning, social sciences, and economics.
Activists & Practitioners: Individuals involved in community-based organizations, occupation movements, and non-governmental organizations working on housing issues.
Government Representatives: Policy makers and officials with expertise in urban development and housing.

Activities During Review Period:

Regular Team Meetings: Monthly meetings involving diverse stakeholders to discuss current challenges, identify research needs, and share experiences related to housing and urbanization.
Documentary Production & Screenings: "City Occupied," a comparative documentary on land and building occupations in Cape Town, Bogota, and Sao Paulo, has been produced and screened at various locations, fostering discussions about occupation practices and urban futures.
Joint Research Proposal Development: Two successful proposals secured funding to continue research on:
"Occupations as Practices of South Design" focusing on innovative design approaches within occupied spaces.
"Urban Vacancy, Occupation and Communing: Advancing a Global Comparative Urbanism" exploring the global phenomenon of urban vacancy and its relationship to occupation and communing practices.
