Summary

James Sakoda's life began in Santa Barbara, where he grew up in a neighborhood with Mexicans, Italians, Greeks, and others. He was influenced by his environment and ran with a gang, getting into mischief like swiping candies and fighting with other gangs. He didn't care for school and often ditched classes to go to the movies or sell items for refund value. When he moved to Los Angeles, he started associating with Japanese boys in his class and liked being around them because they were nice to him. However, he also ran around with Caucasian friends and didn't get along with Japanese girls, finding them too clustered together. He became chairman of his English class and got along with his teachers and classmates, but gradually drifted away from his Japanese friends after graduating. In high school, he was a lone wolf, often going into town by himself, and didn't have a particular girlfriend. He broke away from his Caucasian friends because they started dating and didn't go around in groups anymore. He met a friend in sixth grade, but they grew apart when his friend took a vocational course. James could have been accepted by the Japanese group, but they thought he was shy or a snoot, and he got satisfaction from running around by himself. He went to college, where he was left alone and not pushed to do things, which was a welcome change from high school.
