E. A. Couturier was born in 1869 in Poughkeepsie, NY, and began learning to play the cornet in 1883. In 1898, Couturier became the leader of Gilmore's Band and was known for his ability to play six octaves on the cornet. He started his own company, E. A. Couturier Co. Ltd, in LaPorte, Indiana, and began manufacturing band instruments, including cornets, trumpets, and saxophones. Couturier held several patents for his instrument designs and was praised for producing high-quality instruments. He continued to work in the music industry until his death on February 28, 1950.
