Summary

The three sacraments that confer a character (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders) cannot be repeated. When it concerns the validity of sacraments, a "tutiorist" position, or safest possible course of action, must be followed to avoid doubt and potential sacrilege. A negative doubt without reason should be despised, and a positive doubt requires a reason to believe a defect in matter, form, or intention exists. If a doubt arises, it is possible to reiterate a sacrament "sub conditione" (under the condition it was invalid the first time). The matter and form of the Latin rite of priestly ordination introduced by Pope Paul VI in 1968 are not subject to positive doubt, but vernacular translations may require review. Archbishop Lefebvre's statements about the New Mass and sacraments being "illegitimate" or "bastard" referred to their illicit nature, not their validity.
