Summary

Johann Ludwig Krapf, a German missionary, arrived in Zanzibar in 1844 with his wife Rosine, marking the beginning of modern missionary endeavors in East Africa. Krapf, born in 1810, was ordained in the Lutheran Church but resigned after being rebuked for his enthusiasm. He met Swedish missionary Peter Fjellstedt, who inspired him to join foreign missions. Krapf was sent to Ethiopia in 1838, where he developed a vision to reach the Oromo people with the gospel. After facing disappointments and dangers in Ethiopia, Krapf left for Cairo, where he married Rosine. They later moved to Zanzibar, seeking permission from Sultan Seyyid Said to work among the Gallas. Despite losing his wife and daughter to malaria, Krapf remained in East Africa, establishing a base in Rabai, and was later joined by fellow missionaries Johann Rebmann, J.J. Erhardt, and Johann Wagner.
