Summary

Jerusalem is considered a sacred space by the three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. A Muslim text ranks Syria, Palestine, and Jerusalem as the most holy spots on earth, with the Dome of the Rock as the most holy spot in Jerusalem. Similarly, Jewish and Christian texts consider Jerusalem the center of the earth, with the Temple and Golgotha being key locations. The early Jewish-Christian community prayed in the Temple and later developed theological speculations around the Upper Room and the hill of Zion. After the Roman destruction of the Temple in 70 AD, the Jewish-Christians found new places of worship, including Getsemane, and the hill of Zion became known as the Christian Zion. The Roman emperor Hadrian's transformation of Jerusalem into a Hellenistic city led to the expulsion of Jews and the defilement of Christian sacred places, but the Jewish-Christian presence on Zion persisted until the time of bishop Maximus during the reign of Constantine.
