Summary

John Elder and James O. Arroll arrived in Yerevan, Armenia in January 1918 to open a YMCA center, but found themselves stranded and responsible for the entire operation set up by U.S.-based charities, including factories, orphanages, and a hospital, to rescue Armenians from the perils they faced during the 1918-1920 independent Republic of Armenia. They witnessed momentous events, including the declaration of Armenia's independence on May 28, 1918, and a humanitarian disaster, and their efforts became legend among Armenians and Americans. The exhibit "American Relief in the First Republic of Armenia 1918-1920" reconstructs their story using John Elder's journal, records, and photographs.
