John Gabriel Perboyre was born in 1802 in Montgesty, France, to a farming family. At 14, he was sent to his uncle Jacques' school in Montauban to accompany his younger brother Louis. There, he decided to study for the priesthood and began Latin lessons. He joined the Vincentian Congregation in 1818 and started his novitiate in his uncle's house. Perboyre completed his secondary education, philosophy, and theology, and was ordained a priest in 1826. He taught in various schools, including Montdidier and Saint Flour, where he was appointed to teach theology. He later took charge of a boarding school for boys intending to become priests and held this post for five years. Perboyre maintained a close relationship with his family, particularly his brother Louis, with whom he exchanged letters discussing his work, health, and philosophical debates.
