The Karakhanid Khanate was a Muslim Turkic dynasty that ruled Central Asia from c.955-1213, with designations derived from coins and referred to in literary sources as al-Khaqaniya or al-muluk al-khaniyya al-atrak. Historical information is sketchy due to a lack of internal sources, but it is known that the Khanate began as a loose confederation and was immersed in a two-front war against the Samanids and the Khotan kingdom. The Karakhanids took over Transoxania in 999 and completed their conquest of Khotan seven years later, with the empire bifurcated into eastern and western khanates. The dynasty declined and eventually fell under Kara Khitan rule, with the last Karakhanid ruler executed in 1213. Despite decentralization, the Karakhanid age saw economic growth, urbanization, and trade, with the dynasty assimilating into Arabo-Persian Muslim culture while retaining Turkish characteristics.
